Can Baba Bakala wipe off drug taint?

Baba Bakala : The mother of Gaggi (28), a kabaddi player from Mianwind village, knows that he was addicted to chitta, but she has no idea who supplied it to him. To every query about her son’s death, she replies, “Berah garak ho jaye jina sade tabbar tabah karte, nashe vech ke (Damn all those who destroyed our families with drugs).”
Gaggi isn’t the only one who started going to the local stadium to play kabaddi but soon got addicted to drugs such as heroin and smack.
Mianwind, the native village of sitting Akali MLA Manjit Singh Manna Mianwind, is infamous for the sale of illicit liquor and consumption of chitta. Gurpal Singh, a young farmer of the village, says, “Worried parents no longer allow their children to go to the stadiums.” Nagoke village, once associated with Panthic leaders such as Jathedar Udam Singh Nagoke and Giani Kartar Singh, is now notorious for drug addiction. Villagers used to organise a kabaddi tournament every year. It has been discontinued due to the dope taint. People blame the Akali Dal for the drug menace, but they are afraid of naming any leader. “Villagers will probably get emboldened once the code of conduct is enforced,” says a resident of Pheruman, the native village of Darshan Singh Pheruman, a Punjabi Suba martyr. The Akalis have shifted Mianwind from this SC constituency to Sri Hargobindpur and announced Malkiat Singh AR as their candidate. AAP has fielded Dalbir Singh Tong. Ranjit Singh Chhajjalwadi is expecting the Congress ticket again.
