Earthquake in Nepal: Facebook’s ‘safety status’ feature informs loved ones about one’s wheareabouts

After a massive earthquake shook the Nepal and northern states of India, social networking site Facebook launched a feature that enables you to inform your relatives your ‘safety status’ in the Lamjung quake.Facebook had launched a feature called ‘Safety Check’ in October 2014. The ‘safety check’ feature tracks people in the affected areas through their profile information and updates and the city from which they are using the respective internet service. If you get stuck in the affected areas, this feature will ask you to update your safety status. After you update your status, it will send the message under your name to your Facebook friends, informing them about your safety.After the earthquake, people from affected areas updated their safety status on Facebook and informed their loved ones. Earlier, search engine giant Google had launched a person finder to track victims and survivors of the devastating earthquake.More than 1500 people died in earthquake, measuring 7.9 on Richter scale in Nepal. Nearly 44 people lost their lives in India. Northern states like Delhi, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal severely felt the effect of earthquake. Following a powerful earthquake, huge cracks developed on several buildings. Many of the roads in the affected areas have suffered wide craters because of the impact, affecting the movement of vehicles and rescue operations. It is possible that many of the ones injured could have been trapped under the debris. The rescue operation is still underway.
