London : Romanian Simona Halep beat Sloane Stephens 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 and win the French Open 2019 women’s singles final and become the first Romanian to do so since Virginia Ruzici achieved the feat in 1978 to win a major at Roland Garros. Going into the match she was the hot favourite to win it and she did not disappoint a full-house at Philipe Chatrier Court. Fans were rooting for Halep, they were screaming,”Simona, Simona”. “Honestly, I can’t believe it,” Halep said after the match. “In last game, I didn’t breathe anymore. I did everything I could. It’s amazing what is happening now.” I was dreaming of this moment since I was starting to play tennis. I’m really happy it’s happened in Roland-Garros in Paris – my special city.”
