Mandi landslide: Death toll could climb to 50, say officials; 27 bodies recovered

Dharamsala, August 13 : The death toll due to a landslide that hit two buses near Jogindernagar in Mandi district could climb to 50, officials said on Sunday. Twenty-seven bodies have been recovered so far.Apart from two buses, more vehicles and people were believed to have been at the spot when an entire hillside collapsed last night. Some houses, too, were buried under the debris.
“Twenty-seven bodies have been recovered, and of these 13 have been identified,” an official said. The death toll could go up to 50 or above, district officials said earlier.
Only fragmented pieces of the two buses have been recovered from the mountain of debris so far.  A PTI report quoted Director-General of Police Somesh Goyal as saying that there were eight passengers in the Manali-Katra Volvo bus, while 47 passengers were travelling in the other bus.
