Orbit-like incident in Ferozepur went unnoticed 11 years ago

Ferozepur, 9 May :- The Orbit bus incident in Moga that rocked the state recently is not an isolated case. In another such incident that took place a decade ago, the victim’s father has been running from pillar to post to get justice. His 20-year-old daughter died of head injuries on March 21, 2004, after she was allegedly thrown out of a moving private bus. Narrating his tale of woes, Manohar Lal, who is a journalist by profession, alleged: “My daughter, Suman, a student of BA (first year) at Government College, Faridkot, was thrown out of a moving bus. Driver Ranjit Singh, conductor Buta Singh and their accomplice hit her on the head with an iron rod and threw her out of the bus near Satiawala chowk on the outskirts of Ferozepur. She died on the spot.”
He said the bus staff would often harass her daughter who used to commute daily to her college in Faridkot. The police had filed a case only under public pressure and that too under Section 304-A of the IPC. The police tried to hush up the case as the bus belonged to an influential Muktsar businessman who was also a close relative of a senior police officer.“I gathered sufficient evidence against the accused. But despite that the senior police and administrative officers fail to take action on my complaint. I also sat on a dharna in front of the office of the SSP many times, but in vain,” he alleged. Manohar later moved the court, following which the culprits were booked under Sections 302/34 of the Indian Penal Code, but they managed to get bail.
