SGPC May Appoint Ex-Bank Officer Harcharan Singh as Chief Secretary

AMRITSAR SAHIB May 26 : As per information availed by internal sources to Sikh24, a Delhi based retired bank officer is trying to ensure his appointment as chief secretary of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) for which he has conducted a number of meetings with its president Avtar Singh Makkar and other top office bearers. The sources name the aspirant as Harcharan Singh who is former general manager of Punjab and Sindh Bank and originally belongs to Haryana state. In this regard, he has reportedly held meetings with the office bearers of the SGPC in a hotel in Amritsar. The SGPC also seems to be leaning towards appointing him. Due to which it has delayed the appointment as he has not yet received Amrit.A news story published by Punjabi Tribune (24 May 2015) also gave the indication that a bank officer may be appointed on the post but it did not mention his name.Another reason to delay the appointment is upcoming celebrations of 350th foundation day of Sri Anandpur Sahib on June 19. For delaying his appointment, the Gurdwara body has set up a sub-committee and gave him (Harcharan Singh) time to fulfill the condition of being ‘Amritdhari’.
Meanwhile, move to setup a sub-committee is considered as just a formality. As per insiders, decision of appointing him on the post has reportedly been made internally. The office bearers of the SGPC are arguing that after retirement of two officers of secretary ranks including Dilmegh Singh, a vacuum prevailed in the supreme Sikh body. In view of this, it is going to fill the post. Some sources said that Dilmegh Singh who has just retired from the post of secretary of the SGPC and is close to Sukhbir Badal, also stands in line of candidates for the post of chief secretary. On being questioned about the proposed appointment, SGPC general secretary Sukhdev Singh Bhaur said that everyone has the right to pursue the post but the appointment would be done as per rules.
