SGPC member’s son, General Secretary of YAD arrested for kidnapping trader

MANSA : The Mansa police has arrested Kalyan Singh a senior functionary of Youth Akali Dal (YAD) led by Bikram Singh Majithia for kidnapping of a Budhlada based trader who was released after the family paid ransom to the abductors.
Kalyan Singh is son of Sukhchain Singh Dharampura a member of SGPC and also secretary of Sant Samaj. While Sukhchain Singh is close to Badal family his son Kalyan Singh has close links with Bikram Singh Majithia who appointed him General Secretary of the YAD.
The trader Chiman Lal was abducted on gun point in August and kept in the captivity for 15 days. The abductors demanded a ransom of s.One crore but a deal was struck for Rs.30 lakhs. Chiman Lal was released after the family paid the ransom to abductors. A police officer of DSP rank posted in Mansa had allegedly facilitated the payment of ransom to the kidnappers. The DSP was transferred after role of the DSP came to light. However no other departmental action was taken against the Police officer.
The Police on Thursday morning raided the house of SGPC member here and arrested Kalyan Singh and also recovered Rs.30 lakhs from his possession beside four motorcycles used by the accused. An accomlice of Kalyan Singh was also nabbed. The Police action took Sukhcian Singh and his father by surprise and they tried to use their contacts with Badal family to save themselves.The police was clueless about the accused persons but district police was keeping a close watch on Sukhchain Singh Dharampura who was earlier accused for giving shelter to some Militants. Kalyan Singh is also named in the bad characters list of the area for his involvement in certain criminal activities in the past. He faced atleast six cases under arma act and robbery.
