A return gift to Narendra Modi from Nawaz Sharif?

Days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a surprise visit to Pakistan and met his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif, the neighbour breached the trust of India once again. When almost everyone was hoping some kind of positive progress in talks between India and Pakistan, the latter back-stabbed.
Heavily-armed Pakistani terrorists attempted to storm the Air Force base in Pathankot, triggering a day-long gunbattle in which three security men and all the five infiltrators were killed. The attackers were believed to have infiltrated from Pakistan and there was speculation that they may belong to Jaish-e-Mohammad headed by Maulana Masood Azhar of the Kandahar hijack episode.Whenever India takes a step ahead to hold peace talks with Pakistan, the neighbour country tests its patience at border by violating ceasefire or promoting terrorism against India. India has long maintained terror originating from across the border should stop for the peace talks to deliver. Sadly, Pakistan deceived every time. There is no doubt that the terrorists responsible for Pathankot attack were from Pakistan. The only question is whether they have been sent by the Pakistani establishment or they have come on their own. Even if they have come on their own then the establishment might have helped them. Otherwise it is highly impossible to cross the border undetected carrying such heavy ammunition.
“The investigation that has been carried out in the Pathankot attack till now has established the links with Pakistan. These telephone calls placed in the public domain are very instructive because in many ways you see a pattern that you could link to either 2008 Mumbai attack or the Gurdaspur attack. There is communication between the perpetrators and the handlers… The linkage with Pakistan is fairly credible,” Lieutenant General (Retd.) Raj Kadyan told ANI.
Every time a dialogue process is started between India and Pakistan something happens. Last year when Modi and Sharif agreed to restart the dialogue process at the Ufa summit, three gunmen dressed in army uniforms attacked a police station in Gurdaspur, Punjab. The Indian government blamed Pakistan for the attack, based on Global Positioning Satellite data seized from terrorists following the encounter, which revealed that the slain militants had infiltrated through Pakistan.
The GPS data unearthed the sinister plan of Pakistan, but New Delhi didn’t allow the incident alone to scuttle talks. Narendra Modi once again reached out to Pakistan through his surprise visit at Lahore Airport and met Nawaz Sharif. The two sides were expected to hold their foreign secretary-level talks in Islamabad on January 15. The Pathankot attack proved that either Pakistan is promoting state-sponsored terrorism against India or at least failed to stop militants infiltrating from its soil. Islamabad must understand that the peace talk and terrorism cannot go hand-in-hand. India wants peace and is putting efforts for it too. The stubborn attitude of Pakistan and its soft stand on terrorist outfits working from their soil won’t deliver peace in the region.
