Dubai : All eight teams have announced their squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 to be held in England and Wales. The tournament will be an 18-day affair starting from June 01. Top eight ranked teams will participate in the competition, and the teams have already begun their preparations.
Ahead of the tournament, teams will get to play warm-up or practice matches, as has been the case with any ICC event. Interestingly, only six teams will play warm-up matches. England and South Africa will be already battling it out in the three-match One-day International (ODI) series ahead of the tournament. So Australia, Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, New Zealand and Bangladesh will play the warm-up matches at two designated venues- Kennington Oval in London and Edgbaston in Birmingham. ICC Champions Trophy 2017 will be the eighth edition of the tournament. India comes into the tournament as defending champions, having defeated England in the final of 2013 edition. After ICC’s revenue reform, which saw India’s revenue cut down to significant margin, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) threatened to pull out of the tournament and delayed in naming the squad. BCCI then eventually named the full strength team following the board’s Special General Meeting (SGM). West Indies, who won the 2004 edition, did not qualify for the Champions Trophy after they failed to find a place in the top eight in the ICC rankings at the September 2015 cut-off. This will be for the first time that West Indies will not take part in the Champions Trophy. On the other hand, Bangladesh returns to the tournament for the first time since 2006 edition.
