CHANDIGARH: Kamalnath AiICC General Secretary who was appointed incharge of Punjab affairs today resigned from post following political storm over his appointment. He was targeted by SAD and AAP for his alleged involvement in 1984 anti-Sikh riots. His resignation has been accepted by party presicdent Sonia Gandhi.
PPCC president Cap Amarinder Singh had given clean chit to Kamalnath but opposition parties had launched an offensive against Congress on this issue. Kamalnath also enjoyed good rapport with ruling Badal family but SAD had political compulsions to oppose the appointment.
In a letter written to AICC President, Kamalnath has claimed that he was not involved in riots and neither any FIR was lodged against him till 2005. He said that campaign against him is politically motivated.
He said that he was resigning because he didnt want that attention is diverted from real issues in Punjab.
