Guru Granth Sahib World University rejects Nagra’s claim on high fees

FATEHGARH SAHIB : Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee(SGPC) run Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib reacted strongly to Fatehgarh Sahib Congress MLA Kuljit Singh Nagra’s statement published in a section of press that the SGPC institutions, including the University charging higher fees from the students and making profit. The university authorities in a official press release refuted the statement of the local MLA and termed it as totally baseless and fact less. The release clarified that the University is charging far less fee from the students as compared to other private Universities of Punjab; a fact which can be easily verified by comparing admission prospectuses of various Universities. The University authorities categorically mentioned that the University offers 10 per cent tuition fee waiver of 10 per cent to the needy and meritorious students in all the courses irrespective of caste, creed and religion. Also, the Kashmiri Sikh girls are offered total free education at the University including free facility of hostel and mess. The details of the various scholarships offered by the University are available at the University website. According to the University authorities, it is the University’s mandate is to provide world class education to every section of the society and Nagra’s claim that the University is earning profit is far from truth. In fact the SGPC provides a financial assistance of Rs8-10 crores annually to the University for construction related works and development of infrastructure.
The University has set up three research centres with the aim of connecting the lives of human beings to the knowledge and teachings of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. For the promotion of sports and healthy lifestyle a hockey academy for girls has also been started. In the past two years, the hockey academy girls have won major hockey tournaments including the junior national championship and Nehru Gold cup hockey tournament. These girls are provided free boarding, lodging and education facilities at the University. Not only in teaching, the University has carved a niche for itself in research as well. Eleven major projects were sanctioned to the faculty of the University. The University authorities appealed to MLA Nagra not to drag the University and other SGPC institutions in the political mudslinging as the Varsity and other SGPC institutions at Fatehgarh Sahib have made a name in North India for their academic excellence and world class infrastructure. The authorities claimed that students from 10 different states of the country are receiving their higher education on the University and advised the MLA to refrain from giving such blatant statements in the media for gaining political mileage.
