Amidst controversy, Harcharan Singh takes over SGPC chief secretary

AMRITSAR: Amidst controversy over appointment of Chief Secretary in the Shriomani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), the new incumbent Harcharan Singh today took over the charge here immediately after the SGPC President Avtar Singh Makkar handed over the appointment letter to him.Harcharn Singh took over the charge in the presence of senior SGPC functionaries.SGPC also known as mini parliament of Sikhs having main headquarter at Amritsar in the premises of Golden Temple. The appointment of Chief Secretary in the SGPC is being opposed by Sikh organisation since there is no provision of such post in the constitution of the SGPC. Harcharan Singh former director of Punjab and Sindh Bank is considered close confodent of SAD President and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.Makkar who was present there, said that all the existing SGPC secretaries would work under the newly appointed chief secretary besides rest of the staff of SGPC.Makkar said that Harcharn Singh was seasoned and experienced person would be proved better person to look after and to improve the more than one hundred educational institutions including Medical Colleges and Engineering college, University and other educational colleges and schools being run by SGPC. Makkar said that he would also be helpful to promote Sikhism all over.
