Patiala : Laying down the new rules of engagement, police officers in the rank of SP and below in Punjab were today clearly told to either “act against drug peddlers or face the consequences”.
At the first meeting of the Special Task Force (STF) set up to fight the drug menace, ADGP Harpreet Sidhu warned his men that their work was being monitored. “Either you act against the peddlers in your areas or we will act against you. Any laxity will invite stern action,” Sidhu is reported to have told the officers.
“I have been tasked with fighting the drug menace. And there will be no room for any error,” the STF chief warned. The 1992-batch IPS officer, who headed the anti-Naxal operations in Chhattisgarh that won him the President’s Medal for Gallantry in 2003, is known to be a tough task master.
All officers, including IG (Zone) AS Rai, DIG (Range) Sukhchain Singh and the SSPs of Patiala, Sangrur and Barnala were asked to raise the slogan “Punjab Police di jai”. The ADGP spotted an officer dozing off. He made every officer below the rank of SP perform 10 sit-ups. A DSP from Patiala, who was reportedly fidgeting with his cellphone, got a dressing down. Another DSP and subordinate could not come up with a convincing answer when asked about steps being taken to check the flow of drugs in their area. They were told to pull up their socks.
