After China blocks move on Lakhvi, India says decisions of 1267 committee binding on all UN members

New Delhi, June 23 : A day after China blocked India’s move in the United Nations for action against Pakistan for the release of Lashkar-e-Taiba leader Zaki Ur Rehman Lakhvi from jail, New Delhi on Tuesday clarified that the government’s concerns with regard to the 26/11 mastermind’s release had been conveyed to the Chair of the 1267 Committee on the United Nations, noting that the decisions of the committee are binding on all member countries.
“The government had taken up the issue of violation of the 1267 sanctions regime in respect of Zaki ur Rehman Lakhvi. The 1267 committee has been created under chapter seven of the United Nations charter and its decisions are binding on all member countries of the UN. Our concerns in this matter were conveyed to the Chair of the 1267 Committee. We also raised this bilaterally with the other member of the Committee. In the case of China, this matter has been taken up at the highest political level,” Ministry of External Affairs official spokesperson Vikas Swarup said.According to reports, the UN Sanctions Committee, which met at New Delhi’s request, sought a clarification from Pakistan on Lakhvi’s release but China blocked the move, claiming that India had not provided sufficient information for the same.
