Akali MP slams Centre for opposing ‘genocide’ motion

Chandigarh : Akali MP and party general secretary Prem Singh Chandumajra today slammed the BJP-led NDA government for denouncing the motion adopted by the Ontario Assembly to declare the killings of Sikhs in November 1984 as genocide. He said the Narendra Modi government had reopened the wounds of the Sikhs by this provocative stand.
He stated that rather than calling upon the Canadian Government to withdraw the motion, Parliament should pass a similar resolution to assuage the feelings of the community.
Phoolka asks SAD to clarify stand
Earlier in the day, Leader of the Opposition HS Phoolka asked the SAD to clarify its stand on the Ontario motion.
“We would not allow the SAD to adopt double standards on issues related to the state, which has suffered a lot over the decades because of Parkash Singh Badal’s political opportunism,” said Phoolka.
Talking to The Tribune on the phone, the AAP leader said if the SAD leadership agreed with the Ontario motion, it should immediately convene a meeting of its core committee and pass a resolution endorsing the motion and declaring the riots as genocide. He said the SAD should also lodge a protest with the PM against the stand taken by the Centre on the issue.
