Assault case: Cops drag man half-naked, caught on CCTV

Sangrur : The police this morning allegedly dragged a resident of Guru Nanak Colony, Sanjay Sharma, out of his house and took him to the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) office. He was only wearing undergarments. The incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed at his house. It is alleged that the cops misbehaved with his wife and two minor children.
A CCTV footage showed some policemen forcibly taking Sharma, who works for a liquor contractor at Chandigarh, out of his house while he is wearing only boxer shorts. His wife Mini Sharma said some policemen from the CIA Bahadur Singh Wala arrested her husband for theft even as they did not have his arrest warrant.
“Around 8.30 am, four cops from the CIA, who were in civil clothes, and an ASI, who was in uniform but without name plate, forcibly dragged my husband out of bathroom and took him away without showing any documents,” she said.
Mini claimed that her husband had been implicated for having helped Gayatri Devi, who had claimed that she was wrongfully detained and tortured at the CIA office on the night of September 26.
“When I asked the ASI his name, he abused and threatened me,” said Mannat, Sharma’s 13-year-old daughter. The family alleged that the policemen took away a television set top box, mistaking it for DVR of the CCTVs installed at their house. They returned an hour later on realising the mistake, and threatened that they would beat Sanjay Sharma if they did not get the DVR of the CCTVs.
Ravinder Kaur, one of Sharma’s neighbours, alleged that the policemen threatened them to stay indoors.“Sanjay is facing various criminal cases and our CIA team arrested him today in a theft case. He deliberately did not wear clothes to create drama even as our team gave him enough time to do so. Our team only caught him from his arms and did not drag him out of bathroom,” said DSP Sandeep Wadehra.
Yesterday, Gayatri Devi’s husband Charanjit Singh, who is facing eight criminal cases, and three other persons, including Sanjay Sharma, were booked on a complaint of a former sarpanch of Saron, Kaur Singh, for snatching Rs 50,000 from him.
