Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa’s Committee Successfully Negotiates Release of Bhai Hardeep Singh

AMRITSAR SAHIB—Delivering on the promise made to the co-ordination committee spearheading Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa’s struggle, the Punjab government has reportedly released political Sikh prisoner Bhai Hardeep Singh from Amritsar jail on December 24. He had been languishing in jail since 1997. Bhai Hardeep Singh was sentenced with a life sentence in 1997 in a case registered against him under sections 148 (Rioting with deadly weapons) and 302 (Murder) of the Indian Penal Code. He was also indicted under section 24, 54 and 59 of the arms act.
Confirming developments, Amritsar Central Jail’s Superintendent RK Sharma informed Sikh24 that Bhai Hardeep Singh has been granted a premature release at the behest of Punjab government. He added that premature release is granted to convicts having good conduct.
Meanwhile, Bhai Ravinderjeet Singh Gogy has announced that the Punjab government was ready to grant the premature release of about five or six more political Sikh prisoners within a week. He also signified that a World level convention might be called within few days to deliberate upon the conclusion of the Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa’s struggle.It is noteworthy that Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa has been on continuous hunger strike since January 16, 2015 seeking the release of political Sikh prisoners.
