Criminal Case Against Indian Police In Portugal

LONDON : Solicitors of Bhai Paramjeet Singh Pamma have today filed a criminal complaint against three of the four Police officers sent by India to Portugal to oversee the handing over of an extradition request against him. The criminal complaint is in relation to officers SP Ashish Kapoor, DSP Rajinder Singh Sohal and DIG Balkar Singh Sidhu. SP Kapoor is alleged to have tortured Paramjeet Singh in India prior to his being granted asylum in the UK. DSP Sohal has previously been convicted in the Indian courts of various crimes against prisoners. DIG Sidhu has previously been charged with kidnap and killing of a prisoner. The criminal complaint was filed by Paramjeet Singh’s legal team including Gurpatwant Singh Pannun of USA based ‘Sikhs for Justice’ and UK solicitor Amarjit Singh Bhachu. The criminal complaint has been filed with the Portuguese Ministry of Justice for the immediate attention of the Portuguese Attorney General. Solicitor, Amarjit Singh Bhachu said, “Paramjeet Singh’s legal team is keen to ensure that every avenue is pursued for his release and return home. The filing of this criminal complaint is an important step not only in Paramjeet Singh’s case but also in the pursuit of justice by countless victims of torture and extra-judicial killings at the hands of Indian security services over many years.” Chair of the Indian Sub-Continent Affairs Sub-Committee of Sikh Council UK, Gurdial Singh Atwal said, “It is totally insensitive of India to have sent tormentors of Paramjeet Singh and those who are accused and convicted of such heinous crimes to Portugal in this way. This smacks of arrogance on behalf of India and confirms that Paramjeet Singh will be mistreated again if he is extradited.”
