Dipa Karmakar at Rio Olympics 2016: 5 quick facts about the Indian gymnast

Rio : Dipa Karmakar, India’s first woman gymnast to qualify for Olympics, further scripted her success story as she advanced to finals of vault event in artistic gymnastics at the Rio Olympics. The gymnast finished eighth scoring 14.80 points to achieve the feat. The 20-year-old, after occupying sixth position on the standings, had to wait for the final results and eventually made it by finishing eighth. Dipa, however, could not make it to the finals of other events. In uneven bars Dipa finished 77th with 11.666 points. In beam the young athlete ended on 65th spot with 12.866 points and in floor exercise she ranked 75th with 12.033 points.
Dipa will now compete in the finals of vault on August 14 and will be seeking gold or at least a medal finish in her maiden outing at the Olympic Games. So as Dipa has created a history of sorts we bring to you few facts about her.
#1- Dipa is from Tripura and was just six years old when she took the sport. And that verily is paying off now.
#2- Dipa was just 14 when she won the Junior Nationals. In state, national and international championships the young athlete has 77 medals to her credit, majority of them are gold- 67.
#3- Dipa has already won two medals in the artistic gymnastics field at an international level. In 2014 at Glasgow Commonwealth Games she secured a bronze medal and became the first Indian woman to achieve the feat. A year later, in 2015 at the Artistic Gymnastics Asian Championships Dipa clinched yet another bronze.
#4- Dipa once suffered from a postural deformity called flat feet. According to Firstpost.com, Dipa’s coach Bisbeshwar Nandi had revealed that while training she was required to put in an extra shift to get the curve in her feet.
#5- Dipa recorded the highest score in Produnova, known as the vault of death, in the world. She registered 15.100 (7.000 for difficulty, 8.100 for execution with a 0.1 penalty). Yamilet Pena of Dominican Republic and Fadwa Mahmoud of Egypt are the only other two of her contemporaries to have attempted the Produnova.
