Earthquake strikes Punjab, parts of Pakistan: 4.6 magnitude tremors felt in Amritsar, alert issued

New Delhi, July 17 : Strong earthquake tremors wee felt in Punjab’s Amritsar on Sunday. The earthquake measuring 4.6 on Richter Scale were felt at around 5:24 pm on Sunday, news agency ANI reported. Following the tremors a high alert has been issued in several regions of Punjab. The tremors were also felt in Lahore, Sheikupura and several other areas of Pakistan.According to reports, the epicenter of the earthquake was 37 km away from lahore and the depth of it was 10 kms. So far there are no reports of any property damage or loss to life. A resident of Lahore, Waqas Habib Rana, said to Al Jazeera that the earthquake was “very intense” and might have caused damage. He said, “I could hear horrific noises coming out of the ground like the earth was going to split in two parts. I hope everyone is safe”. Pakistan based journalist Mehr Tarar tweeted, “And the earth shook as if it was going to break into pieces”.The tremors were felt in the region few hours after light quake has hit Gujarat. On Sunday morning tremors of magnitude 4.7 were felt in various parts of South Gujarat. No damage has been reported in the region.The Met Department reportedly said that in Gujarat the tremors were felt at 9:24 am. The epicentre of the quake was 14 km from Surat City, financial hub of Gujarat.On Sunday morning, Gujarat chief minister Anandiben Patel, “Earthquake of magnitude 4.7 reported near Surat this morning. State government is taking necessary action. No damage reported till now”.
