FIR after BJP alleges fake news on Salaria

Gurdaspur : The cyber police station, Mohali, has registered an FIR against unknown persons following a complaint by BJP leader Manoranjan Kalia, who claimed that some persons were misusing social media to defame party candidate Swaran Salaria.
The FIR under Sections 465, 469, 471, 500, 171G, 120B IPC and Sections 66 and 66(D) of the Information Technology Act, 2000, was registered today.
Kalia has also sent copies of the complaint to the Election Commission of India and the Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab, seeking action. The police have appointed Inspector Deepak Singh as the investigating officer.
Kalia claimed that someone had uploaded fake news on a social networking site “that Salaria’s candidature has been cancelled”.
“The beneficiary of such a message is the Congress candidate from Gurdaspur. The needle of suspicion clearly points towards him because he is the one who stands to get an advantage of such development. The Congress nominee and his supporters have violated the model code of conduct. The matter constitutes a criminal offence and requires a thorough probe and also the registration of a criminal case,” said Kalia in his compliant.
