AMRITSAR: Amritsar Vikas Manch has sought to grant permission to Turkish Airlines to fly from Sri Guru Ram Dass ji international airport. In an email to prime minister Narinder Modi and minister for civil aviation Ashok Gajapathi Raju, AVM patron Dr. Charanjit Singh Gumtala stated that at present this airline has daily flight from Delhi and Mumbai to Istanbul. In 2013, when India granted additional flying rights to Etihad Airline, Turkish Airlines sought a five-fold increase in its current flying rights of about 4000 seats a week to over 20000 and permission to fly from six more Indian cities which includes Amritsar. Now when Modi is visiting Turkey on 15 November, Manch leader hopes that the issue to fly Turkish Airlines from Amritsar, Ahmadabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata to Istanbul will also come up for discussion. Turkish Airlines flies from Istanbul to 110 countries with a strong network in Europe, US, UK where large number of Punjabis live. A direct flight from Amritsar to Istanbul will connect Amritsar to many destinations in 110 countries.
