Gurmehar withdraws from campaign against ABVP, requests to be left alone

New Delhi, February 28 : Delhi University student Gurmehar Kaur, who has been in the news for her Twitter campaign against alleged violence by ABVP at Ramjas College, on Tuesday tweeted that she was withdrawing from the Save DU campaign.
Twenty-year-old Kaur, had started the campaign, “I am not afraid of ABVP”, following the violence at Ramjas College, which went viral and received massive support from students across various universities. “I’m withdrawing from the campaign. Congratulations everyone. I request to be left alone. I said what I had to say…” Kaur said in a tweet.
“I have been through a lot and this is all my 20 year self could take,” the student of Delhi’s Lady Sri Ram College said. She, however, did ask students to join the march that was being held in the Delhi University on Tuesday.“The campaign is about students and not about me. Please go to the March in huge numbers. Best of luck,” she added. “To anyone questioning my courage and bravery.. I’ve shown more than enough,” she said.
Kaur, daughter of a Kargil martyr, launched a social media campaign against the ABVP after Ramjas College witnessed large-scale violence between members of AISA and ABVP supporters last week. The genesis of the clash was an invite to JNU students Umar Khalid and Shehla Rashid to address a seminar on ‘Culture of Protests’ which was withdrawn by the college authorities following opposition by the ABVP.She posted a video on Facebook with placards, one of them saying: “I am a student of Delhi University. I am not afraid of ABVP. I am not alone. Every student of India is with me.” She then allegedly received rape and life threats on the social media by some who called her “anti-national”.
Kejriwal to meet L-G
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will meet Lt. Governor Anil Baijal on Tuesday afternoon to demand action against the ABVP and those who issued rape threats to the Delhi University student.Kejriwal also alleged that the anti-national slogans were usually raised on directions of the ABVP, the student’s wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). “Threatening our daughters and sisters with rape; is this BJP’s patriotism? Shame on these people,” he said.
