Gurugram murder sets alarm bells ringing in city

Chandigarh : The murder of a seven-year-old student of Ryan International School in Gurugram has set alarm bells ringing in the city.
Taking a serious note of the incident, the Chandigarh Commission for Protection of Child Rights (CCPCR) has sought a detailed report on the safety measures being undertaken by private and government schools in the city.
Harjinder Kaur, chairperson of the CCPCR, said at every school in Chandigarh, rigorous police verification should be done of each staff member. “Besides, it is also the responsibility of the school to conduct a verification of the bus drivers and conductors and other staff member who are not directly employed by the school. A proper record should be kept of a person who enters the school premises,” she said. She said the commission would conduct surprise checks to verify the security arrangements in schools.  Penal action would be taken if any laxity was found on the part of the schools.  Closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras are installed in every school in the city. “However, we will check the current status of e-surveillance to see how many of these CCTVs are working and how many are lying defunct,” said Harjinder Kaur.
