ICC ODI Team of the Year: Why did the selection of ODI team of the year ridicule many?

News Delhi : The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced yearly awards today at their headquarter in Dubai. Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has been awarded the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year award and ICC Cricketer of the Year for his outstanding performance. Alongside Ashwin, South African wicketkeeper batsman Quinton de Kock won the prestigious ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year. Meanwhile, the bowling sensation of Bangladesh Mustafizur Rahman won the Emerging Player of the Year award while Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq has been awarded the ICC Sprit of Cricket award. Alongside these awards ICC also announced ICC ODI and Test team of the year.
Indian Test captain Virat Kohli-led ICC ODI Team of the Year raised a few questions. The ODI team is comprised of four South African players, three Indian players, three Australian players and one England and West Indies player.
Here is the team: David Warner, Quinton de Kock, Rohit Sharma, AB de Villiers, Jos Buttler, Mitchell Marsh, Jos Buttler, Ravindra Jadeja, Mitchell Starc, Kagiso Rabada, Sunil Narine, Imran Tahir.
The team of the year was selected by a group of experts. Rahul Dravid, Gary Kirsten and Kumar Sangakkara selected the players. “In batting order, selected by Rahul Dravid, Gary Kirsten and Kumar Sangakkara based on players’ performance in the period from 14 September 2015 to 20 September 2016,” the ICC press release stated.
From a fan’s perspective this team selection didn’t make any sense, because if a player didn’t make any impressive outing or out of the team for bad how could he get a slot in the team of the year when ICC clearly stated that the team was made on the basis of performance in the period from 14 September 2015 to 20 September 2016.
