Kargil martyr’s family awaits stadium in his memory

Sangrur : Amid celebrations of Kargil Vijay Diwas today, the family of Sepoy Darshan Singh, who sacrificed his life in the 1999 Kargil War, awaits the construction of a stadium and a memorial in the district’s Sheron village. “The village is proud of my brother Darshan Singh, who sacrificed his life for the country. We got the money and other facilities promised by the government, but money is not everything. At the time of cremation, several leaders had visited our house and promised to construct a stadium and a memorial in the name of my brother. But nothing has been done yet,” alleged Ravinder Singh, Darshan’s elder brother.
After leaders’ promise, the village panchayat had announced to give panchayat land for a stadium and a memorial, while a written request was sent to the government. But village awaits a response to date. “Our village is still willing to provide land for a stadium if the government takes initiative. We request the state to take action,” Ravinder said. Deputy Commissioner APS Virk said the village could construct a memorial on panchayat land by passing a resolution. “If the village wants it to be constructed on government land, it will need permission from the government.”
