Chandigarh : Three months after cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu resigned as MP from Rajya Sabha, the Awaaz-e-Punjab outfit led by him today brokered a deal with the Congress after his wife Dr Navjot Kaur, former BJP MLA from Amritsar (East), and Pargat Singh, former SAD MLA from Jalandhar Cantt, met AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi in Delhi late this evening. They later met the PPCC chief. But Punjab affairs in-charge Asha Kumari said the duo did not meet Rahul. She spoke to Rahul on the phone who gave his approval to their joining the Congress. Navjot Kaur and Pargat Singh will formally join the party in Delhi on November 28. Sidhu is expected to address the media in the coming days before he joins the Congress. Sources say his entry into the party is being planned by party strategist Prashant Kishor in a way that the Congress campaign peaks towards the election day.Capt Amarinder said the party would be further strengthened with “like-minded” people joining in. Only a few days ago, Sidhu had said he was ready to back the Congress minus Capt Amarinder. The PPCC chief said the Awaaz-e-Punjab leaders had joined the party unconditionally. Sources said Pargat was expected to be offered the Nakodar or Shahkot seat. Navjot Kaur was likely to recontest from Amritsar (East).
