Ludhiana and Amritsar in Punjab now on top in road fatality rate in whole country

LUDHIANA: Known as Manchestor of India, the industrial town of Ludhiana has not only lost its glitter, the city has also earned dubious distinction of being number one in the whole country in road fatality rate with one death reported every day in the month of August 2015.Ludhiana had not only turned deadlist city but also coupled with holy city of Amritsar to be rated among top dirtiest cities of India. If Amritsar is on top in the dirtiest city list, it stands second among deadliest cities of India.According to official figures, Ludhiana has reported over 32 Deaths in the month of August 2015 in road accidents. And more than 50 people have been seriously injured leading a question mark on the Road Safety & Traffic Management in the city.Dr. Kamaljit Soi, an International Road Safety Expert and Vice Chairman of Punjab State Road Safety Council Government of Punjab said that as per report of 108 Ambulance services the total number of Road Accident reported in the month of August in Commissionrate Ludhiana is 117 which comes to nearly 4 accidents every day.City has become a deadliest in the whole country with Transport Research Wing of Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, Government of India in its latest report released three days back, reported that chances of getting killed in a road accidents are highest in Ludhiana in the whole country with the chance %age standing at 67%. Second in the list is Amritsar which stands at over 60%.Soi said that vver 75000 people in the age group of 15-34 have died in the road crashes in the country the report says. “we are losing young valuable human resource due to road crashes in India. Punjab loses more than 5000 people every year out of reported 6500 road accidents”, he added.Over speeding, drunken driving & Overloading have been sighted as the main reasons for these accidents & deaths. But in Ludhiana these are least challalned offences in the city & state Over 28% road deaths & accidents have been caused by heavy vehicles including trucks, trailersand tempos.
