Mallya arrested again in London, granted bail soon after

New Delhi, October 3 : Liquor baron Vijay Mallya was arrested for the second time in London on Tuesday and granted bail shortly afterwards on previous bail conditions.
Mallya, who has been on the run from law and evading Indian investigative agencies, was arrested by the UK Metropolitan Police in relation to ongoing proceedings, the Crown Prosecution said, and was presented before the Westminster Magistrate’s Court for bail. According to official Indian sources: “This arrest was pursuant to the extradition request made by the Government of India based on money laundering charges against him”.
The once “King of Good Times” has been arrested under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act for defaulting banks to the tune of nearly Rs 9,000 crore, loaned by consortium of banks to the now defunct Kingfisher Airlines. He has now accused of diverting the money to tax havens.
Mallya had earlier been arrested on April 18 this year on separate charges of fraud based on an FIR by the Central Bureau of Investigation, but was released on bail thereafter. Sources added that this was simply a technical arrest with money laundering added to the earlier charges of fraud, but with no change in bail conditions.
Mallya had managed to give the slip to agencies in India in March last year when he flew out to London on an ‘indefinite leave to remain’ visa that allows him indefinite stay in UK, and has refused to appear before Indian courts and investigators.
