Phil Simmons Applies for Team India’s Head Coach Job: Reports

London : The competition for attaining the job of head coach of Indian cricket team has increased especially after the Board of Control for cricket in India (BCCI) extended the last date of submitting the applications.
The new name that has joined the list is former West Indies coach and player Phil Simmons. According to a report in The Mumbai Mirror, Simmons has sent in his application for the position.
Simmons application takes the total number applicants to seven, including Ravi Shastri, Virender Sehwag, Dodda Ganesh, Lalchand Rajput, Richard Pybus and Tom Moody. All the applicants will appear for an interview on July 10 before Cricket Advisory Committee comprising of Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar ad VVS Laxman. Simmons’ credentials as coach are impeccable, with the 54-year-old having guided Ireland to the 2011 and 2015 World Cups during an eight-year stint, where he also oversaw wins over Test nations like England, Windies and Zimbabwe.
Simmons quit the Ireland job in 2015 to take up the Windies coach’s role where he led them to a World T20 title. However, he was sacked by the West Indies Cricket Board in September 2016 due to “differences in culture and strategic approach”.
Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on May 25, decided to not to renew Anil Kumble’s year-long contract and put out a notification inviting application.
