Power cuts back as demand increases in Punjab

CHANDIGARH : Power demand in Punjab has increase by 550 lakh units with the rise of temperature in May and closure of three units of Rajpura and Talwandi Sabo due to technical faults has forced PSPCL authorities to impose power cuts of more than three hours.
PSPCL has shut down its 4 units on no demand even when people in state are facing power cuts of various duration.The power surplus state is facing power cuts even the paddy season is one month away.The power demand in the state on April 30 was 1050 lakh units and it rose to 1590 lakh units on Saturday . The over dependence on private sector for power generation PSPCL was caught on wrong foot after Rajpura and Talwandi Sabo units stopped generation.
The Talwandi Sabo unit is down since April 18 due to boiler leakage and no revival date has been mentioned in the daily report of centeral electricity authority. Both units of Rajpura thermal went out of generation earlier this week and one unit is expected on Sunday and no date has been mentioned against other unit.
Under such circumstances PSPCL is running today 4 units at Ropar thermal , two units at Lehra Mohabatt and one unit at Bhatinda thermal plant.
The maximum power demand in Punjab on Friday was 6427 MW which increased to 7076 MW on Saturday . The demand is increasing very sharply as the temperatures rises.Punjab has made adequate arrangement of power purchase for the coming paddy season. The problem will arise when suddenly a super critical units trips and it takes 8 hours to start a fresh unit.
