PU protest turns violent, students holed up in gurdwara surrender

Chandigarh : High drama prevailed on Panjab University campus on Tuesday as students protesting against fee hike, who were holed up inside a gurdwara after a clash, surrendered before police.Thirty-eight students who clashed with police earlier during a protest, were taken into police custody.
Earlier, the bandh on the university turned violent as several students and policemen were injured in a clash.Police used force and fired several rounds in the air, used water cannons, and cane-charged students to disperse the mob.Irate students pelted the police with stones and flower pots.All student unions had joined hands to protest against the recent fee hike in the university.After a violent clash between police and students left several injured, around 40 students took shelter inside a gurdwara on the campus. Heavy police force was deployed outside.The gurdwara management warned police against entering the religious place even as SSP Eish Singhal’s repeated requests to students to come out for talks found no takers.
