SC notice on cattle sale ban

SC notice on cattle sale ban

New Delhi : The Supreme Court today issued notice to the Centre on a petition challenging its notification banning sale and purchase of cattle from animal markets for slaughter. A Bench headed by Justice RK Agrawal asked the Centre to respond to the petition by July 11, the next date of hearing.
On behalf of the Centre, Additional Solicitor General PS Narasimha told the Bench that too much was being read into the notification, which was just an attempt to regulate livestock trade. The Madras High Court has already stayed the notification.
At a press conference to highlight the achievements of his ministry, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the government couldn’t control eating habits of people. He, however, said there was a need to strike a balance because a large number of people in India revered cows and the Directive Principles of State Policy of the Constitution called upon the State to prohibit cow slaughter.
