Security deployed along SYL canal in view of INLD threat

Patiala : Police and paramilitary forces have been stationed along the SYL canal near Kapuri village.
Though at present there is no agitation or gathering on any side of the Punjab-Haryana border, the security agencies are keeping a close watch on the situation and except residents no outsider is being allowed to enter the villages.
Sources said police had dug parts of the canal boundary to ensure that no one entered the area in vehicles, nor JCB machines could reach the canal boundary.
“We have been directed to ensure that no untoward incident takes place as the situation can turn volatile,” they said.
Deputy Commissioner Ramvir Singh and SSP S Bhupathi visited the spot.
Meanwhile, Capt Amarinder Singh, in a statement, in view of the INLD leadership’s open defiance of the law and intelligence reports indicating revival of terrorism on the issue, demanded deployment of armed forces to prevent any untoward incident on February 23 when the INLD plans to force its way into Punjab to dig the controversial canal.
Saying that he had been repeatedly warning that the issue had the potential to revive terrorism in Punjab, Amarinder said intelligence reports endorsing his apprehensions necessitated a strong crackdown on the INLD and its leaders before the situation went out of hand.He demanded preventive arrest of INLD leader Abhay Chautala and cancellation of party supremo Om Prakash Chautala’s parole to control the situation, which had escalated to dangerous proportions.
