SIKH PROTESTER KILLED IN POLICE FIRING IN JAMMU

Jammu, June 4 : One person was killed and about a dozen injured, including three policemen, when the police opened fire on Sikh protesters who were staging demonstration against the removal of the posters carrying pictures of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee observes June 6 as Ghallughara Divas at Akal Takht in Amritsar every year where prayer is performed in the memory of all those including Sant Bhindranwale who died during Operation Bluestar, the army attack on the Golden Temple complex, in June, 1984.
The protest had erupted yesterday and today they blocked highway leading to clash with the police.The killed person has been identified as Jagjit Singh of RS Pura.
Reports said three injured policemen have been shifted to hospital in a critical condition after the mob attacked them.Tension gripped the entire Jammu city after the news of police firing spread.Sikh protesters blocked the Jammu-RS Pura road at Gadigarh by erecting road blocks and burning old tyres on the highway.
Senior police and civil administration officials, including the district magistrate and the senior superintendent of police, have rushed to the spot.Reinforcements of police and CRPF have also been rushed to the area to prevent further violence.
