Sikh youth sends Mathura police into tizzy

policeAGRA : A 19-year-old Sikh youth, Amreek Singh, hailing from a family of Gurdwara sewadars, who cut his own hair for a hipper look created a riot-like situation in Mathura after claiming that his hair had been forcibly cut by four people, including two women, while he was sleeping on the terrace of his house in Nagachitola area.
As the news about the forcible haircut spread, tension mounted in the locality. The youth’s parents work as ‘sewadars’ in a local Gurdwara. However, the police, which had doubts over his statement due to discrepancies in it, kept questioning him and ultimately Amreek confessed that he had cut his hair on his own and had weaved a story to escape the wrath of his parents and the community. Talking to TOI, SP (City) Alok Priyadarshi said, “Amreek has given a written statement confessing that he had cut his hair on his own. He decided to cut his hair after his friends teased him of keeping such long hair in this summer heat.” The SP said, “Though Amreek went ahead and cut his hair, he got scared of the repercussions and made up the story to escape the wrath of his parents, who are devout Sikhs and work in a Gurudwara.” Priyadarshi said that treasurer of the local Gurudwara Committee, Satnam Singh, had also counter-signed the confession in which Amreek has assured that he would not do such a thing again.
