AMRITSAR: Tug of war virtually appeared on surface between the SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar and Jatehdar Akal Takht Gyani Gurbachan Singh. These two persons are heads of two important Sikh religious bodies in the Sikh community.
Today, Jatehdar Akal Takhat (highest Sikh Temporal Seat) Gyani Gurbachan Singh has called meeting of Sikh intellectuals, scholars and certain SGPC members and Senior SGPC officials with regards to attack on Sikhs living abroad due to mistaken of identity besides desecration of holy Guru Granth Sahib took place at various locations of Punjab in past.Surprisingly enough, none of the SGPC members, SGPC officials bothered to attend the meeting convened by Jatehdar Akal Takhat. It was said that Makkar had already verbally told SGPC officials to abstain from the meeting to be held at the secretariat of Akal Takhat headed by Jathedar.
By letting down the Jathedar Gyani Gurbachan Singh, Makkar has challenged the supreme authority of Akal Takhat while issuing secret note to SGPC officials to remain at distance from the meeting of Jatehdar. However, earlier on April 8, 2016 SGPC president Makkar had convened the meeting on similar issue but didn’t bother to invite Jatehdar Akal Takhat in the meeting the reason best known to him.
