Windies spark Twitter outrage after ‘Mankad’ controversy

New Delhi : The cricketing fraternity on Tuesday expressed their outrage on Twitter after West Indies bowler Keemo Paul effected a ‘mankad’ to claim Zimbabwe’s last wicket with three runs needed off the final over to win the pulsating Under19 World Cup group stage match in Chittagong.West Indies advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament after Paul whipped off the bails before sending down the first ball of the 50th over, catching non-striker Richard Ngarava out of his crease. The decision was referred to the TV umpire who subsequently declared Ngarava run-out.Reflecting on the incident, former New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming tweeted, “Right or wrong, just a sad way to end a good game especially with so much on the line #winatallcosts????.”
While England’s current ODI captain Eoin Morgan slammed West Indies’ ‘disgraceful’ behaviour, teammate Jos Butler said, “Can’t believe what I’ve just seen! Embarrassing! #CWCU19.” The last-wicket incident proved an anti-climax to what had been an absorbing do-or-die contest between two valiant teams attempting to nail a quarter-final berth.
