Carrara (Gold Coast), November 6:
India’s bowlers delivered a stellar performance to seal a 48-run victory over Australia in the fourth T20 International at Carrara Oval on Thursday, taking an unbeatable 3-1 lead in the five-match series.
Washington Sundar was the star of the show with incredible figures of 3 wickets for 3 runs, while Axar Patel and Shivam Dube picked up two wickets each, helping India defend a modest total of 167/8 on a pitch that offered inconsistent bounce. Remarkably, all six Indian bowlers chipped in with at least one wicket as Australia collapsed dramatically from 67/1 to 119 all out in 18.2 overs.
Chasing 168, Australia began confidently with Matthew Short and Mitchell Marsh striking six boundaries in quick succession. However, Axar Patel turned the game India’s way by trapping Short leg-before and bowling Josh Inglis soon after. Marsh, who looked threatening, mistimed a slower ball from Dube and was caught at backward square leg.
From there, India’s bowlers took complete control. Tim David fell to another Dube slower ball, Josh Philippe was dismissed by Arshdeep Singh, and Glenn Maxwell was undone by Varun Chakaravarthy’s clever googly. Sundar then cleaned up the tail, trapping Marcus Stoinis and catching Xavier Bartlett off his own bowling to claim his 50th T20I wicket. Jasprit Bumrah added one more to his tally by bowling Ben Dwarshuis, before Sundar wrapped up the innings by removing Adam Zampa.
Earlier, India’s innings began on a bright note with Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill putting on a 49-run opening stand. Both batted fluently, but once the partnership was broken, India’s momentum dipped. Despite several batters getting starts, none converted them into big scores as Australia fought back through tight spells from Nathan Ellis (3/21) and Adam Zampa (3/45).
Suryakumar Yadav’s quickfire cameo and late contributions from the lower order helped India reach 167/8, which ultimately proved more than enough thanks to their disciplined bowling effort.
With this win, India head into the final T20I in Brisbane on Saturday with the series already secured and confidence running high.
