NSW a safe haven and home for refugees

This Refugee Week, the NSW Government is reaffirming its commitment to helping refugees find more than a safe place to live but also enabling them to thrive.

Minister for Multiculturalism Mark Coure said since 2016, more than 31,000 refugees have settled in NSW, making our strong multicultural society even stronger.

“Each person adds to the rich diversity we have here in NSW,” Mr Coure said.

“Refugee Week, while promoting harmony and togetherness, is also an opportunity for us to reflect on experiences of people from a refugee background, and celebrate the contributions they make to our society.

“This year’s theme of Healing, is about promoting human connections as a way to heal wounds and move forward.”

Mr Coure said the NSW Government proudly invests in programs and partners with organisations to ensure people from a refugee background have a safe place to call home and are provided with every opportunity to heal and connect with their community.

“A prime example is our Families in Cultural Transition program, which takes newcomers through a 10-week series of workshops to make sense of the new world in which they live,” Mr Coure said.

“This is among a raft of other initiatives, which highlight our efforts to supporting all new arrivals in our great multicultural society.”

Refugee Week runs from 19 to 25 June.
