As blood donations in NSW hit a critical low, the NSW State Emergency Service (NSW
SES) is rallying members to roll up their sleeves and donate blood in the 2024
Emergency Services Blood Challenge.
NSW SES Deputy Commissioner, Damien Johnston emphasised the urgency of the
situation.
“The Red Cross is seeing the highest demand for blood donations in the last 10 years.”
The challenge commenced today at the Sydney Town Hall Donor Centre. Deputy
Commissioner Johnston led by example, donating blood alongside representatives
from several emergency services across the state.
The campaign, running throughout June, aims to boost blood supplies, especially
crucial during the winter months when donations typically dwindle due to seasonal
illnesses.
In June last year, emergency services personnel accounted for 13,938 blood donations
during the annual challenge. SES alone contributed 537 donations, saving an amazing
1,611 lives.
“We’re engaging in friendly competition with fellow emergency service groups to rally
the highest number of blood donations,” Deputy Commissioner Johnston said.
“I’m hoping that SES members get around this great cause and encourage others to
as well. Every donation counts.”
“By donating blood, our volunteers extend their support to the local community in yet
another selfless act.”
NSW SES Shellharbour City Unit Senior Group Officer, Nikki Ristoski attended the
Wollongong Lifeblood Donor Centre today and encouraged everyone to support such
an important cause.
