New Delhi, Dec 11 — India’s non-fossil fuel installed capacity climbed to 213.70 GW in November 2024, reflecting a robust 14.2% increase from 187.05 GW a year earlier, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). This growth underscores the nation’s dedication to achieving its clean energy objectives as outlined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The total non-fossil fuel capacity, encompassing both operational and pipeline projects, surged to 472.90 GW, marking a 28.5% rise from the previous year’s 368.15 GW.
From April to November 2024 (FY24-25), India added 14.94 GW of renewable energy capacity, nearly doubling the 7.54 GW added during the same period in FY23-24. Notably, November 2024 alone witnessed the addition of 2.3 GW of capacity, a fourfold increase compared to 566.06 MW in November 2023.
Highlights of Renewable Energy Growth:
- Solar Energy:
Installed solar capacity jumped by 30.2%, from 72.31 GW in 2023 to 94.17 GW in 2024. Including projects in the pipeline, total solar capacity grew 52.7%, reaching 261.15 GW from 171.10 GW. - Wind Energy:
Wind power capacity rose by 7.6%, from 44.56 GW in 2023 to 47.96 GW in 2024. Total wind capacity, including pipeline projects, grew 17.4%, reaching 74.44 GW. - Bioenergy and Small Hydro:
Bioenergy capacity increased by 4.6%, from 10.84 GW to 11.34 GW. Small hydro projects saw a slight rise from 4.99 GW to 5.08 GW, with total capacity (including pipeline projects) reaching 5.54 GW. - Large Hydroelectric Projects:
Installed capacity increased marginally from 46.88 GW to 46.97 GW, while total capacity, including upcoming projects, rose from 64.85 GW to 67.02 GW. - Nuclear Energy:
Installed nuclear capacity grew from 7.48 GW to 8.18 GW, with the total capacity (including pipeline projects) remaining stable at 22.48 GW.
India’s renewable energy sector continues to demonstrate robust and diversified growth, paving the way for achieving its ambitious clean energy targets.
