New Delhi, Sep 10 – Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday confirmed that India is in “active talks” with the United States for a bilateral trade agreement.
The statement came after both US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted positive momentum in ongoing trade discussions and strengthening bilateral ties.
Speaking at the FICCI Leads Summit, Goyal noted that trade negotiations are also progressing with the European Union and New Zealand, while a trade pact with Oman is expected to be finalised soon.
Earlier in the day, President Trump announced that his administration had resumed trade negotiations with India, calling it a significant step towards easing tensions.
“I am pleased to announce that India and the United States of America are continuing negotiations to address trade barriers between our two nations,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
On Tuesday, Trump described PM Modi as a “very good friend” and expressed optimism about talks:
“I feel certain that there will be no difficulty in coming to a successful conclusion for both of our great countries.”
Responding to Trump’s remarks, PM Modi wrote on X that the discussions would help unlock “the limitless potential of the India-US partnership.”
“India and the US are close friends and natural partners. I am confident that our trade negotiations will pave the way for a brighter, more prosperous future for both our people. Our teams are working to conclude these discussions at the earliest. I look forward to speaking with President Trump soon,” Modi posted.
Last week, during a White House press briefing, Trump referred to Modi as a “great Prime Minister” and reaffirmed his friendship:
“I’ll always be friends with him.”
PM Modi later echoed the sentiment, stating he fully shares President Trump’s views and appreciates the warm gesture.
