Avoid non-essential travel to Iran until further notice: MEA

Tehran/New Delhi, Jan 5: India on Monday advised its citizens to avoid all non-essential travel to Iran amid recent developments in the country. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) urged Indian nationals and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) currently in Iran to exercise caution, avoid areas witnessing protests or demonstrations, and closely follow updates from the Embassy of India in Tehran. Indian citizens residing in Iran on long-term visas were also advised to register with the embassy if they have not already done so.

Iran is witnessing widespread protests across several cities, triggered by the sharp depreciation of the national currency, the rial. In some provinces, clashes between security forces and demonstrators have resulted in multiple deaths.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump warned Iran against using violence to suppress protests, stating that Washington is closely monitoring the situation. Speaking to reporters, Trump said the United States would respond strongly if Iranian authorities resorted to killing civilians, though he did not outline any specific military or economic actions.

Trump’s remarks underscored that the U.S. is actively tracking developments inside Iran and considering its options, while stopping short of announcing immediate measures. He reiterated that the situation is being watched “very closely,” emphasizing vigilance and readiness.
