A new independent grassroots group in the NSW State seat of Willoughby has achieved a significant milestone, with over 100 local residents gathering at the Willoughby Bowling Club this past Sunday.
Hosted by Willoughby Votes, the strong turnout—occurring a full 12 months before the March 2027 State Election and before any candidate has been named—highlights the community’s active and ongoing participation in our democracy.
The event featured special guest Geoffrey Watson SC, a leading advocate for transparency in government. Mr Watson addressed the crowd on the vital importance of political integrity and accountability—themes that resonated deeply with local attendees.
“To see over 100 people engage so passionately this far out from an election is extraordinary,” said Claire Finch, a volunteer with Willoughby Votes. “It proves that our community is ready to move beyond business-as-usual and is looking for a representative who can prioritise us over any Party.”
Willoughby Votes’ current focus is on actively listening to the views and interests of residents to build a platform that genuinely represents their community.
“Our priority right now is engagement with our community,” said volunteer Pat Evans. “We are gauging the views and priorities of the community first to ensure that any future independent candidate is a good match for the values and interests of the people they seek to represent.”
Willoughby Votes is continuing to evolve its plans as it grows a community-led groundswell, with its sights firmly set on the March 2027 NSW State election.
Previously Gladys Berejiklian’s electorate, the NSW State electorate of Willoughby is currently held by Liberal MP Tim James on a 2.6% margin. He has previously faced significant challenges from independent candidate Larissa Penn.
