First look at final plans for Epping’s $26m pool upgrade

Work on the $26.88 million upgrade of the historic Epping Aquatic Centre is on track to begin by mid next year with the City of Parramatta Council today sharing the final design for the centre.

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Sameer Pandey said the upgrade would deliver more pool facilities, improved accessibility and a new family play area while retaining the unique character of the centre.

“Epping pool has been a much-loved part of this community since the 1960s. We’ve worked hard to ensure this upgrade will retain what’s special about it – like its connection to the surrounding bush – while providing modern facilities that will ensure it can be used by more of the community year-round,” Cr Pandey said.

“The new design delivers on our commitment to provide a new 20-metre indoor pool for swim school and other activities, and an upgraded, more accessible 50-metre outdoor pool.

“For the kids, a reimagined family play area, including upgraded shallow splash pools with beach entry and water play equipment will be included alongside the picnic area.

“In addition, two lifts will be installed connecting the carpark to the centre, and we’ll deliver new change facilities for all users, including family rooms.”

The community is invited to learn more about the final design and talk to staff at two sessions planned later this month:

  • Tuesday 20 June from 3.30-5pm
  • Saturday 24 June from 9am-11am

North Epping residents Drew and Rae Bewsher are daily visitors to Epping Aquatic Centre and have been coming to the pool for the past two decades. They described Epping pool as a ‘hidden and undiscovered gem’.

“Epping pool is a vital community asset which has been well-maintained and is well-loved by the community. It’s the reason we come to swim 20 laps here every day,” he said.

“While our routine will have to change, we understand the closure is necessary and we’re pleased to see new facilities being added to the centre and hope the City minimises the closure period.”

Construction is expected to commence after the 2024 swim season and take about 18 months to two years to complete.
