The Community Broadcasting Association of Australia and First Nations Media Australia announced their release of First Sounds Volume 7 – the final release of 2021. The release is another incredible array of First Nations musical talent set for airplay across community radio nationwide.
In the two years since First Sounds began, over 80 artists have been featured on CD compilations, distributed to over 250 community radio stations and presenters. The initiative has seen a substantial increase in opportunities for airplay and exposure for First Nations artists, many of whom struggle to gain a foothold in the music industry. With community radio in Australia being the main entryway for a musician to create an audience, First Sounds provides a pathway for the sounds created by these incredible artists. Tracks on Volume 7 were produced all over the country and sung in various Indigenous languages.
To select the final artists, tracks were listened to by a rotating selection panel of First Nations music industry leaders. Emily Wurramara, Dallas Woods, Alice Skye and Shellie Morris are just some that have participated in the selection to deliver a strong vision of First Nations music in today’s Australia. Artists on First Sounds Volume 7 are:
Flewnt
Boox Kid
Glves
Iqonik
Murringaahddi
Eleea
Lydia Fairhall
Alyawarre Hip Hop
Jalgany
Mulong
Dani Teveluwe
Sharron Mirri Bell
As well as the First Sounds CD, all First Sounds tracks are available digitally via the CBAA’s Amrap platform (amrap.org.au) and indigiTUBE. This includes any music submitted to First Sounds which was broadcast-ready. First Sounds has also expanded to include a mentorship program for these artists, with professional guidance from Emily Wurramara, Kobie Dee and Mau Power.
Stay tuned for more announcements on First Sounds for 2022!
