Israel’s Parliament to dissolve next week ahead of a new snap election

Dr Eyal Mayroz is a Senior Lecturer in the University of Sydney’s Department of Peace and Conflict Studies, a former counterterrorism intelligence specialist (Captain Retired, Israel Defense Forces), and an expert on the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Dr Mayroz says:

“Come next Monday, Israel’s government is expected to dissolve parliament and call for a new snap election, the fifth time in less than four years. The breaking point for the fragile eight parties’ governing coalition was the failure to extend regulations that apply Israeli civilian law to Israelis living in the West Bank. A fear that the opposition will continue to derail the passing of the extension made prime minister Naftali Bennett decide to fall on his sword.

“Surveys of Israel’s public suggest a possible comeback of a Netanyahu government. Netanyahu is currently standing trial on corruption charges but has refused to leave politics. As his Likud party would most likely be the largest in the next parliament, this will give him a mandate to try to form a coalition.”

Dr Mayroz is available to discuss the implications.
