New Delhi, July 16: Social reformer and education innovator Sonam Wangchuk remains on an indefinite hunger strike, with growing concern over his deteriorating health prompting intervention from the Delhi High Court.
The High Court on Wednesday directed authorities to ensure regular medical monitoring of Wangchuk, observing that “every life is precious” and instructing officials to take all necessary measures if his condition worsens. The court’s directions came after a petition highlighted the activist’s declining health during the prolonged fast.
According to doctors monitoring his condition, Wangchuk has lost more than 9 kilograms since beginning the hunger strike. Medical experts have warned that the risk of serious complications, including potential organ damage, increases significantly as the fast continues.
Despite mounting health concerns, Wangchuk has indicated that he intends to continue his protest, saying he is “not in good shape” but remains committed to his demands. The hunger strike has drawn nationwide attention, with supporters, public figures and civil society groups urging the government to engage in dialogue.
The Supreme Court Bar Association has also appealed to Wangchuk to end his fast while expressing concern over what it described as the lack of institutional response to the issues he has raised.
Best known for his pioneering work in education and sustainable development in Ladakh, Wangchuk has been a prominent advocate for environmental conservation and educational reform. His innovations, including the internationally acclaimed “Ice Stupa” project, have earned him global recognition, while his life inspired elements of the popular film 3 Idiots.
As his hunger strike enters its nineteenth day, all eyes remain on both his health and the government’s response, with medical experts continuing daily assessments under the High Court’s directions.
