Men’s Hockey World Cup: Harmanpreet, Abhishek Brace as India Beat Pakistan 5-3

Amstelveen, August 19: Captain Harmanpreet Singh and forward Abhishek scored two goals each as India defeated arch-rivals Pakistan 5-3 in a thrilling encounter at the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026 on Wednesday. The victory at the Wagener Hockey Stadium secured India’s place in the next stage of the tournament.

Harmanpreet converted penalty corners in the 5th and 21st minutes, while Abhishek scored twice from field play in the 11th and 24th minutes as India took early control of their final Pool D match.

Pakistan fought back strongly, with Hannan Shahid scoring twice and Sufyan Khan adding another goal to keep the contest alive. However, India responded each time and remained composed under pressure, particularly during the final quarter.

Hardik Singh added India’s fifth goal in the 35th minute from a penalty stroke, restoring a three-goal advantage after Pakistan had narrowed the gap.

The win saw India finish second in Pool D and keep their hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive. England topped the group with three wins, while Pakistan and Wales moved into the classification phase.

India began the match with attacking intent, repeatedly creating opportunities down the left flank. Their pressure paid off in the fifth minute when a dangerous ricochet inside the Pakistan circle resulted in a penalty corner. Harmanpreet’s initial drag-flick struck a defender’s foot, giving India another opportunity. The Indian captain made no mistake with his second attempt, firing a powerful flick past goalkeeper Ali Raza to put India ahead.

India continued to dominate possession and earned another penalty corner soon after, although Harmanpreet’s effort was comfortably saved. Aditya also threatened with a promising run down the right, but his final pass failed to find an Indian attacker.

India doubled their lead in the 11th minute. Harmanpreet’s aerial pass found Abhishek, who entered the circle and attempted a clever pass. The ball deflected off Pakistan’s defence and wrong-footed the goalkeeper, giving India a 2-0 advantage.

India maintained their momentum into the second quarter. In the 21st minute, another penalty corner created an opportunity for Harmanpreet. After an initial variation involving Rajinder was saved, the rebound returned to the Indian captain, who created space before firing the ball into the net to make it 3-0.

Pakistan responded almost immediately. After India lost possession in midfield, Pakistan launched a quick attack. The Indian goalkeeper initially denied Moin Shakeel, but Hannan Shahid reacted fastest to the loose ball and pulled one goal back in the 22nd minute.

India restored their three-goal cushion just two minutes later. Jugraj Singh’s powerful slap was brilliantly controlled by Abhishek at the top of the circle. The forward continued his run from the left and finished from a tight angle to make it 4-1.

Pakistan responded once again, earning a penalty corner in the same minute. Sufyan Khan converted with a well-placed flick to reduce India’s advantage to 4-2.

The second quarter produced four goals in an action-packed spell, with both sides finding the net twice.

India extended their lead again in the 35th minute after Aditya was brought down inside the circle, resulting in a penalty stroke. Hardik Singh stepped up and calmly converted to make it 5-2.

Pakistan continued to search for openings but struggled to break through India’s defence. India also came close to adding another goal when Sukhjeet found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but he was unable to maintain control as the ball went beyond the baseline.

Pakistan pulled another goal back in the 46th minute after an error in India’s midfield allowed Hannan Shahid to capitalise and score his second goal of the match, making it 5-3.

The final quarter saw Pakistan commit more players forward in search of a comeback. India, however, remained disciplined and absorbed the pressure effectively. Pakistan earned a penalty corner in the 58th minute and attempted a variation, but the move broke down.

India controlled the closing moments and held on for a hard-earned 5-3 victory.

The result confirmed India’s second-place finish in Pool D and kept the team in contention for a semi-final spot. England progressed as group winners, while Pakistan and Wales will continue in the classification phase.
